Two Fighters Added to Rizin Flyweight Grand Prix
Rizin Fighting Federation plans on putting on quite the
flyweight tournament this summer.
The Japanese promotion recently announced the two newest additions — Jose Torres and Takaki Soya — to its upcoming 125-pound grand prix. The bracket will begin at Super Rizin 4 on July 27 at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Pairings will be revealed through a drawing on July 1 via YouTube. The tournament winner will be crowned Rizin flyweight champion.
The other confirmed participants include: Hiroya
Kondo, Nkazimulo
Zulu, Yuki Motoya,
Hiromasa
Ougikubo, Makoto Shinryu, Yuki Ito,
Erson
Yamamoto and Alibek
Gadzhammatov. With the total number of participants now at 10,
it’s unclear if byes will be implemented.
A former Titan FC champion and two-time UFC veteran, Torres has lost three of his last four professional outings. While all of those defeats have come under the Brave Combat Federation banner, his lone victory — a split verdict over Makoto Takahashi — come in his Rizin debut on New Year’s Eve.
A longtime Shooto veteran, Soya is 4-2 in Rizin. Most recently, the 30-year-old Paraestra Matsudo product took a unanimous decision win against John Dodson at Rizin “Otoko Matsuri” on May 4. That avenged a previous setback to the former UFC title challenger that occurred under the BKFC banner.
Super Rizin 4 features a trio of title bouts at the top of the bill: Naoki Inou vs. Ryuya Fukuda at bantamweight; Seika Izawa vs. Yu Jin Shin at super atomweight and Rajabali vs. TBD at featherweight. The event will also include a featherweight clash pitting Kleber Koike Erbst against Mikuru Asakura.
